The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has charged students, youths and owners of small and medium scale businesses in the state to take advantage of technology and leverage on the many opportunities that abound in social media to develop their skills and grow their businesses amid the disruptions caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Governor Obaseki made this call on the occasion of the commemoration of the 2020 World Social Media Day, which is marked by Mashable, a global, multi-platform media and entertainment platform, and other tech giants. According to the governor, “Social media has become a crucial part of how we interact with our friends, families, business communities and even run our government, especially in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Hence, there is need for careful planning to harness the opportunities presented by the social media for human capital development and job creation in order to mitigate the impact of the pandemic.”...
Following the intervention of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the State Police Command has commenced the release of #ENDSARS protesters, arrested across the state. Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said in Benin City, the state capital on Monday that “the release of the #ENDSARS protesters in the state, followed the intervention of Governor Obaseki.” Osagie added: “Governor Obaseki held talks with the Edo State Police Commissioner, Mr Johnson Kokumo on the need to release the protesters and the release has commenced across the state.” Recall that the governor, while lauding the Inspector General of Police for the dissolution of SARS, assured the release of arrested #ENDSARS protesters in the state and urged protesting youths to de-escalate confrontations.
Residents in Edo State have commended the state government for its response to the coronavirus (COVID-19), noting that the stay-at-home order was expedient in containing the spread of the virus. A cross-section of residents, who spoke with journalists in Benin City, said the state government has taken commendable steps in containing the spread of COVID-19, ensuring that people observed social distancing and restricting unnecessary movements that could jeopardise their health.
