CORONAVIRUS: Car dealers count losses, commend govt actions so far but sue for stimulus package.

BENIN CITY: CEO of Idris and sons motors, Alhaji Idris  and other motor sales dealers in Benin city have lamented the lack of sales of their motor vehicles due to the partial lockdown/stay at home order of the state government. However all except one commended the government's action claiming that it is meant to mitigate the spread of the novel disease called Corona virus. The only one dissenting voice opined that CORONAVIRUS is non existent. He claimed that it is high fever the world has renamed CORONAVIRUS. Continuing while talking with journalists in Benin, the minority car dealer said even in Italy, no black person has been killed by the desease insisting the one or two blacks who died were killed by some other ailments rather than CORONAVIRUS. He therefore called for an end to the lockdown since government is not providing stimulus package such as food items and money.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has signed the Quarantine Regulations made pursuant to Section 8 of the Quarantine Act, the Public Health Law and other legislations, as the state firms up its response framework to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the state. Entitled ‘Infectious Diseases (Emergency Prevention) Regulations 2020’, the regulation gives legal sanctions to the response actions of the Edo State Government to the COVID-19 pandemic. Obaseki appoints Okungbowa as new Head of Service

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has approved the appointment of Mr. Anthony Osas Okungbowa as the state’s new Head of Service.   This followed the retirement of the former Head of Service, Mr. Isaac Ehiozuwa, after the mandatory 35 years of service.   In a statement, Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., said “This is to inform the general public and in particular Edo State Public Service that with the retirement of Mr. Isaac Ehiozuwa as Head of Service, following the mandatory 35 years  of service, His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki in exercise of his powers under Section 208 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, has approved the appointment of Mr. Anthony Osas Okungbowa as Head of the Civil Service of Edo State.”   Ogie said Mr. Anthony Osas Okungbowa is a serving Permanent Secretary in Edo State Civil Service, adding, “This appointment takes effect from 1 st  April, 2020.”

Coronavirus: Edo CAN tasks churches on govt’s order, demand shutdown of services within premises

The Edo State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called for a shutdown of services within church premises across the state, as part of urgent measures to support government’s efforts to check the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).  The Chairman of the Edo State CAN, Bishop Oriname Oyenude, made the appeal during a press briefing in Benin City, Edo State capital. According to him, “All churches should totally close down. We discovered that government restriction on church services to a maximum of 20 persons is still a big risk when we observed the trend. Coronavirus: Local councils move to enforce Edo govt’s stay-at-home order

With the directive by the Edo State Government to the 18 local councils to step up effort in checking the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), chairmen of the local councils have intensified campaigns to complement the effort by the state government to check the spread of COVID-19 in the state. While inaugurating a 20-man Local Government Taskforce Committee on COVID-19 management, the Chairman of Uhunmwode Local Government Area (LGA), Hon. Napoleon Agbama, said the committee will ensure residents are sensitized on precautionary measures put in place by the Federal and State Ministries of Health to check the spread of COVID-19. The Edo State Government has urged traders dealing on essential commodities in markets across the state, to ensure they carry out the necessary preventive measures against the spread of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). The Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters (Edo South), Hon. Osaigbovo Iyoha, gave the charge during sensitisation campaigns to markets in Benin City, the Edo State capital. Hon. Iyoha, who lead other government appointees visited Ekiosa and New Benin markets in Oredo Local Government Area (LGA) and Uselu market in Egor LGA, where they gave out buckets with spigots and soap to enable traders to observe sanitary measures, including handwashing to contain the spread of COVID-19. Edo govt enforces N125 per litre PMS pump price

  The Edo State Government has insisted that marketers of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) across the state must dispense the product at the approved pump price of N125 per litre.   Commissioner for Minerals, Oil and Gas, Hon. Joseph Ikpea, who addressed journalists while monitoring operations of petrol stations in Benin City, said the essence of the exercise is to ensure dealers comply with the Federal Government's directive to dispense PMS at N125 per litre.   He said the state government is not only concerned about the pump price but the accuracy of metering of petroleum products to motorists, noting, "Complying with the new pump price is not the only issue because some people can reduce the quantity of litres dispensed to motorist and adjust the pump price to reflect the N125 per litre.   The commissioner added, "Parts of the function of the ministry is to ensure compliance among major and independent marketers. Over 2,000 beneficiaries of the Edo State Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Agriprenuer programme in five Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Edo State have hailed Governor Godwin Obaseki for the state’s transparency in training and disbursing of N202m to farmers to expand their businesses.   Focal person, Edo SDGs, Mrs. Ifueko Alufohai said the programme is designed to enable the farmers acquire modern techniques in farm cultivation and empower them to expand their farms, in line with the Governor Obaseki-led administration’s agricultural reforms to attain food sufficiency.   Ninety beneficiaries each are selected from five LGAs, which include Ovia South West, Orhionmwon, Akoko Edo, Etsako West and Esan South East. Following the upswing of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Nigeria, the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has placed a ban on gatherings of more than 50 people in any part of the state, as part of efforts to prevent spread of the virus.   The governor also ordered public officers below grade level 12 (except those providing essential services such as fire service and heal thcare workers) to work from home until further notice.   Governor Obaseki disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the steps taken by his administration to ensure the virus is curtailed in the state.   Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Director of Irrua Specialist Hospital, Sylvanus Okogbenin, said Edo State has recorded its first case of coronavirus.   Okogbenin said, "We have a patient who came back from Europe, was diagnosed and the result confirmed he tested positive for coronavirus. The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has tested negative for coronavirus, but has decided to remain in self-isolation. In a statement, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said the result is that of the rapid diagnostic test, while the governor awaits the result of the PCR test. According to him, “I can confirm that the governor tested negative for coronavirus when he ran the rapid diagnostic test for the virus. However, we are currently awaiting the result of more conclusive PCR test.” “In the meantime, the governor has decided to continue to work in self-solation and he is asymptomatic,” he added. Recall that Governor Obaseki went into self-isolation and sent his samples for testing after two persons he met some days ago, tested positive for coronavirus.
