A professor of Mass Communication at Bayero University in Kano, Balarabe Maikaba, is dead. * The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has approved the appointment of Osaze Ethan Uzamere as his Chief of Staff. In a statement, Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., said the appointment takes immediate effect. Uzamere is the son of Senator Ehigie Uzamere, who represented Edo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly between 2007 and 2011. An investment banker, Uzamere, 38, is a graduate of Stony Brook University, New York, where he majored in Computer and Electrical Engineering. He has had stints with Lehman Brothers and South Grade Engineering, among others. A thorough-bred professional, he had, before his appointment, served as Executive Assistant to Governor Obaseki.

The state government had on Sunday imposed a statewide dusk-to-dawn curfew, which commenced on Monday from 7p.m. to 6a.m. daily. The state Prosecuting Counsel, Mr Okunbor  Orobosa said that the 29 apprehended persons who were brought from New Benin, Okoro and Ugbowo axis,  pleaded guilty to the offences. According to the persecutor,  seven of apprehended persons were seen in public places without wearing masks, while the other 22 person violated the curfew. Coronavirus: Edo govt begins community screening in Oredo LGA*

The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Patrick Okundia has said the state has commenced community and facility based screening for Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Oredo Local Government Area (LGA).   Speaking to journalists in Benin City, the Commissioner said the move is part of efforts by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to prevent the spread of the infectious disease in the state, noting that the screening will be extended to other LGAs across Edo State.   Okundia, who noted that the state plans to begin house to house active case searching, said the screening exercise is an aftermath of the training of all health workers in the state.   He said over 30 communities have been visited for Active Case Search (ACS), while 305 contacts have been line-listed across the state.   Decrying the level of compliance to the state government’s directive aimed at preventing further spread of the disease, he urged residents to complement the government’s efforts at ensuring

Coronavirus: Edo govt constitutes Mobile Courts to try violators of guidelines against spread

The Edo State Judiciary has constituted Mobile Courts across the state to try violators of the Edo State Dangerous Infectious Diseases (Emergency Prevention) Regulations 2020, invoked by Governor Godwin Obaseki to curb the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state.   Recall that Governor Obaseki had on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, signed the Quarantine Regulations made pursuant to Section 8 of the Quarantine Act, the Public Health Law and other legislation, which gives legal sanctions to the response actions of the Edo State Government to the COVID-19 pandemic.   In a statement, the Chief Registrar, High Court of Justice, Edo State, W.I Aziegbemhin Esq., said the state’s judiciary constituted the Mobile Courts to determine cases arising from violations of the provisions of the regulation.   He noted, “Sequel to the signing into law of the Edo State Dangerous Infectious Diseases (Emergency Prevention) Regulations 2020 and pursuant to its provisions and guidelines issued thereto, as well

All COVID-19 patients in Edo stable, responding to treatment, Commissioner assures

The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Patrick Okundia has reassured that all eleven coronavirus (COVID-19) patients in the state were stable and responding well to treatment, noting that Edo State is ready to handle worst-case scenarios.   The commissioner, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, said some of the confirmed cases are currently being managed at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) and the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH).   According to Okundia, since the onset of the outbreak, Edo State has recorded a total of 76 suspected cases, 12 confirmed cases and one death, while 289 contacts have been line-listed.   He said the suspected cases are distributed among Oredo (30), Esan West (16), Egor (6), Esan Central (8), Ikpoba-Okha (5),Esan North East (4), Etsako west (3),  Ovia North East (2), Owan West (1) and Orhionmwon (1) LGAs.   The commissioner further disclosed that of the 12 confirmed cases, four of them were from Oredo LGA; four from Esan West

The Edo State Government has intensified efforts at creating awareness against the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), taking the sensitization on the importance of the use of facemasks to contain the pandemic to markets, motor parks, eateries and other public places across the state. Leading the team on the sensitization, the coordinator of Public Work Volunteer Scheme (PUWOV), Edo State, Mukhtar Yusuf-Osagie said the increased awareness creation was yielding positive results as drivers, passengers, traders, and other residents across the state were already complying with government’s directive on the compulsory use of facemasks. The traders have also been moved to designated public schools to allow for the fumigation of the markets and other public places, in compliance with the state government’s directive. Edo govt shuts markets from Wednesday for fumigation ...markets to temporarily relocate to public schools

The Edo State Government has directed the shutdown of markets in the state from Wednesday, April 8, 2020, for the commencement of fumigation of the facilities.   Deputy Governor and Chairman, Edo State COVID-19 Response Technical Committee, Rt. Comrade Hon. Philip Shaibu, who disclosed this in a press briefing, said fumigation of the markets would commence from the day of closure.   According to him, "All markets in Edo State are to be shut down effective from Wednesday, April 8, 2020.   As part of efforts to mitigate the economic effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on households and businesses, the Edo State Government is collaborating with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) to ensure adequate production and distribution of food and pharmaceuticals in the state.   Head, Edo State Investment Promotion Office (ESIPO), Mr. Kelvin Uwaibi, disclosed this to journalists in Benin City, the Edo State capital.   Uwaibi said Edo State, under the leadership of Governor Godwin Obaseki has taken bold steps to ensure that manufacturers of food and pharmaceuticals operate in a more seamless environment to reduce the burden of the coronavirus pandemic on consumers and businesses.   According to him, "The Edo State Government has exempted those who manufacture food and pharmaceuticals from the lockdown. We are also working with the association to ensure the free flow of these items to locations where they are most needed within the state."

The Edo State Government has said that the Stella Obasanjo Hospital, which has been repurposed as an infectious diseases centre in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the state, would receive confirmed cases of the disease from Tuesday, April 7. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Patrick Okundia, disclosed this while conducting journalists round the Infectious Disease Isolation Unit of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital, in Benin City. He said the state government has isolation centres in the three senatorial districts of the state, including the Stella Obasanjo Hospital, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) and the Ogbe Nursing Home in Edo South; Auchi General Hospital in Edo North and the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Edo Central. The Edo State Government is establishing over 54 screening centres, with three in each of the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state, as part of efforts to curtail the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Commissioner for Health, Dr. Patrick Okundia, who disclosed this to journalists in Benin City, said health workers and other public health professionals have been trained to manage the centres, with the training cascading to different LGAs in the state.
