Residents in Edo State have commended the state government for its response to the coronavirus (COVID-19), noting that the stay-at-home order was expedient in containing the spread of the virus. A cross-section of residents, who spoke with journalists in Benin City, said the state government has taken commendable steps in containing the spread of COVID-19, ensuring that people observed social distancing and restricting unnecessary movements that could jeopardise their health. The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has approved the reconstitution of the Edo State Judicial Service Commission, following the completion of the tenure of the non ex-officio members of the commission. In a statement, Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, Esq., noted that the date for the inauguration of the new members of the Judicial Service Commission will be announced later by the government. The new members of the commission include Dele Edokpayi, Esq., Mustapha Ikhegbe Abubarkar, Esq., Prof. Anthony Ekata Ogbeibu and Mrs. Felicia Eraze Ogbeide. Following the intervention of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the State Police Command has commenced the release of #ENDSARS protesters, arrested across the state. Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said in Benin City, the state capital on Monday that “the release of the #ENDSARS protesters in the state, followed the intervention of Governor Obaseki.” Osagie added: “Governor Obaseki held talks with the Edo State Police Commissioner, Mr Johnson Kokumo on the need to release the protesters and the release has commenced across the state.” Recall that the governor, while lauding the Inspector General of Police for the dissolution of SARS, assured the release of arrested #ENDSARS protesters in the state and urged protesting youths to de-escalate confrontations.
